Happy Earth Day 2023!

Happy Earth Day, everyone! Did you know the Canadian government reports that more than 40% of Canadians already add more plant-based foods into their diets? This is a win for Mother Earth! But we’ve still got a long way to go when considering how industrial animal agriculture can impact our planet. Global animal agricultural practices emit up to 90 million tonnes of C02 into the atmosphere annually through the unsustainable burning of fossil fuels. When we look at all global lands considered suitable for agricultural use, almost 80% of this land is used for raising livestock and growing crops to … Continued

Bill 62 Keeping Canadians in the Dark On How Farm Animals Raised

Did you know? Last year Bill 62 was passed in Manitoba, making it a criminal offense to document and bear witness to animals who are farmed during production, transport, and slaughter. On May 30 2022, a similar anti-whistleblower Federal Bill (C-275) was introduced to the House of Commons, which threatens to jail animal advocates who expose animal suffering on farms, proposing fines of up to half a million dollars. As with Bill 62 in Manitoba and similar bills in other provinces, ag-gag legislation already exists, making Bill C-275 redundant. Such Bills aim to keep Canadians in the dark regarding how … Continued

This Little Piggy Found Her Way Home

The Winnipeg Humane Society is reminding residents of the importance in responsibly rehoming animals they can no longer keep, especially when it comes to animals currently illegal within city limits. The reminder comes after a juvenile female piglet was found late last month, abandoned in a dog kennel at Kilcona dog park. The piglet was brought to Pembina Veterinary Hospital by concerned members of the public, before making its way to the Winnipeg Humane Society where attempts to locate an owner went unsuccessful. Representatives from the Winnipeg Humane Society, Little Red Barn Micro-Sanctuary and Earthdog Terrier Rescue worked together to … Continued

For the love of horses, it’s time to take action

I hope everyone has enjoyed the touch of summer we have been experiencing; the rays of sunshine give hope for progressive move forward in the world we live in. Speaking of the world we live in, the animal welfare world has some wins, and some loses; I try to strike a balance between writing to you about both to make life on the internet more palatable. There is an issue though that has been left without a move forward and I would like to tell you about it. Currently Canada exports up to 5000 live horses annually to be slaughtered … Continued

Help Us Stop Inhumane Animal Scrambles

Please join the Winnipeg Humane Society in speaking out against inhumane and unnecessary animal scrambles. The issue: Animal scrambles exploit juvenile animals solely for human entertainment purposes and provide no agricultural, historical or educational purpose to fair and rodeo events. Scrambles see young calves and pigs placed in brightly lit, enclosed arenas where they are rushed upon by children and youth. Attempts to chase, grab, tackle and pull at the young, vulnerable animals are made part of the spectacle. Such scrambles also intentionally subject calves and pigs to unnecessary fear, distress and potential injury, all for the sole purpose of … Continued
