Meatless Monday: Lentil and Wild Rice Tourtiere

Photos and recipe by: Angela Tucker Growing up in part with French-Canadian culture, there were certain customs that were followed at Christmas time. One of those was staying up late with my huge family on Christmas Eve as part of the “reveillon”. Another cultural element to the holiday season was “tourtière” which, if you haven’t heard of it already, is basically a pie filled with meat. Since Christmas falls on a Monday this year, I thought it would be a great idea to give you a meatless spin on this traditional dish that you can share and enjoy with your … Continued

Recipe by: Angela Tucker I hope you have all been keeping warm so far this winter! This month I wanted to feature a dish that is an ultimate comfort food. Mac ‘n Cheeze – veganized! Autumn Harvest Mac ‘n Cheeze to be exact. This is not your typical heavy, overly-rich, food-coma type of mac and cheese, so if you are looking for a lighter, healthier version to warm you up one of these cold winter days then give this recipe that I created a try. The sauce features some yummy veggies that you might still have hanging around your pantry … Continued

“Urgent”

“Urgent” That is the one-line text message from the WHS Deputy CEO I received at 1pm yesterday. It was followed by a video showing that our main adoption area at the shelter was completely under water, it was a torrential rain and the ceiling tiles were scattered all over. My reply was short, my hands a bit shaky: “Be right there. Is the back area okay?” I don’t recall much of the drive back to the shelter, other than my brain thinking about the welfare of the animals and the team. Upon arrival, three fire trucks were parked at the … Continued
