For the love of horses, it’s time to take action

I hope everyone has enjoyed the touch of summer we have been experiencing; the rays of sunshine give hope for progressive move forward in the world we live in. Speaking of the world we live in, the animal welfare world has some wins, and some loses; I try to strike a balance between writing to you about both to make life on the internet more palatable. There is an issue though that has been left without a move forward and I would like to tell you about it. Currently Canada exports up to 5000 live horses annually to be slaughtered … Continued

Two Great Causes, One Great Lottery

A Dream Come True for WHS Animals We were beyond excited to announce our partnership in early May with Misericordia Health Centre Foundation on our first ever joint lottery, One Great Lottery! This is a ground-breaking partnership in the Winnipeg non-profit community: two organizations with unique missions partnering to gain support for compassionate care and companionship! I would be downplaying my enthusiasm if I didn’t mention it has been a personal dream of mine to bring a lottery like this to help our shelter animals. CEO Blog: Shelter Capacity and How You Can Help

As the world changes once again to what we can refer to as the new normal, so does shelter life. The WHS is filled to the brim with friends from all walks of life. Every nook and cranny shelters our animals – strays, surrenders, injured animals, critters and so on. Our last few months of adoptions have slowed and are mirroring pre-pandemic numbers; what does this mean for us – we don’t know. What we do know is other shelters across Canada are experiencing similar setbacks. The key to our success is to continue to adopt animals into loving homes. … Continued

Help Us Stop Inhumane Animal Scrambles

Please join the Winnipeg Humane Society in speaking out against inhumane and unnecessary animal scrambles. The issue: Animal scrambles exploit juvenile animals solely for human entertainment purposes and provide no agricultural, historical or educational purpose to fair and rodeo events. Scrambles see young calves and pigs placed in brightly lit, enclosed arenas where they are rushed upon by children and youth. Attempts to chase, grab, tackle and pull at the young, vulnerable animals are made part of the spectacle. Such scrambles also intentionally subject calves and pigs to unnecessary fear, distress and potential injury, all for the sole purpose of … Continued

World Wildlife Day 2022: Polar Bears and Climate Change

It’s World Wildlife Day! Today is the perfect day to celebrate the abundance of diverse wildlife that Manitoba has to offer. From moose to beluga whales, our province is ripe with wildlife that simply cannot be found in many other places. Manitobans are even lucky enough to share our province with vital keystone species like polar bears, who play a direct role in maintaining their respective ecosystems. In recent years, polar bears have served as a poster child for our growing climate crisis. Their territory consists mainly of sea ice – the loss of which is now the biggest threat … Continued

3-3-3 Rule of Adoption

Have you heard of the 3-3-3 rule when it comes to adopting a new pet? The amount of time each individual pet needs to adjust to their new homes will vary, but the 3-3-3 rule helps give an approximation of what new pet owners can expect. The 3-3-3 rule refers to the first 3 days, the first 3 weeks, and the first 3 months after bringing a shelter animal home. In the first 3 days: Your new pet will often be overwhelmed with their new surroundings. This may manifest as a lack of appetite, which is common when pet’s are … Continued

#WHSTips for Pet Dental Health

An animal’s mouth is not much different than a person’s; they require regular upkeep to prevent problems from occurring further down the road. Animals tend to act stoic and try not to show that they’re in pain, so it’s up for us as pet owners to stay on top of our pet’s well-being. Check out these tips for optimal pet dental health: Look for the signs! A healthy mouth should be: free of odor, have healthy white teeth pink gums. If you notice that your cat or dog has bad breath, red gums, is excessively drooling or having issues chewing … Continued

When Numbers Truly Matter.

The absolute hardest part of working in animal welfare and shelter life is dealing with euthanasia. It is a heavy weight on staff and volunteers, and indefinitely causes compassion fatigue and can lead to mental health issues over time. When I first started as your CEO a year ago, I decided to sit on the Rounds Committee, a committee made up of leaders from specialty shelter departments, where these types of decisions are made. We ask ourselves questions such as, ‘is there a live outcome here, is this illness terminal or treatable, is the animal safe to and within the … Continued
