Be a Hero to Animals like Dorrie

Sometimes, second chances look a little bit different. This was the case for Dorrie. The Saint-Boniface Museum is located in an over 180 year old building. The building is amazing, but due to its age, it is easy for rodents to find their way in. Emilie and the staff found out about our Barn Buddies program and wanted to see if they could find a fit that would help them and an animal in need. That’s when they met Dorrie. Dorrie was a great cat, but he liked his alone time. He needed to find a living situation where he could … Continued

CEO Blog: The Season of Giving

Happy Holidays! As we plan celebrations and reflect on the last year and all that we are grateful for, it’s important to remember there are animals and people in our community struggling. The more our community needs us, the more we grow and expand in our operations to meet those needs. We are transitioning from a medium-sized organization to a large operation, with our annual operating budget inching closer to $10M, with the increasing demand for our services. This is why we need your help so desperately. Our shelter is full, and shelters across the country are experiencing the same … Continued

Foster Parents Are Heroes

Without our Fosters, the Winnipeg Humane Society (WHS) would not be able to help as may animals as we do. The shelter is bursting at the seams and fosters make sure that we have some other options when it comes to giving animals a safe place to heal or wait for their forever family. Jill Bristow has been a long time foster at the WHS. She has fostered countless kittens and helped them get a good start on life. During her foster journey she also met her cat Gracie. Gracie has severe Cerebellar Hypoplasia which makes her very wobbly and … Continued

Second Chances Happen Here

Across our city and province, there are animals (and their humans) in crisis. Many are simply looking for their next meal. It takes many heroes to help keep the Winnipeg Humane Society (WHS) in operation and working to ensure no animal goes hungry. “Every time we go out, we see people who are very appreciative of the food bank and happy that they are able to feed their pet.” Two of those heroes are Sadia and Sharukh, who volunteer their time as WHS Emergency Pet Food Bank Drivers, collecting and distributing pet food for families in need. Growing up in … Continued

Animal Welfare and the 2022 Municipal Election: You Spoke Up and We Listened

Winnipeg’s municipal election is just seven days away and there has never been a better time to engage with your city council and mayoral candidates to discuss the animal welfare issues that matter most to you. We at the Winnipeg Humane Society know first-hand how much Winnipeg residents care about animal welfare. Our organization works tirelessly to support pet owners during every step of their pet ownership journey. For instance, the Winnipeg Humane Society currently assists over 10,000 animals annually through internal and external programs, including our low income spay neuter and clinic services, our foster/adoption/behaviour programs, as well as … Continued

Canadian Shelters See Increase In Animals Surrendered and WHS Is No Exception

Hello Supporters, You may have noticed the WHS in the media as of late as we experience high intake and surrender numbers, leading to a very full shelter. Ebbs and flows are the reality of shelter life, but we are currently operating at an 85 percent capacity level at all times, any peaks then fill us to the brim. With that said, we are not alone. This is currently a Canada-wide trend, so much so, Humane Canada, Canada’s federation of Humane Societies and SPCAs, recently held a meeting with stakeholders on the issue. Canadian shelters are seeing an increase in … Continued

Summer is a time for both you and your pet to enjoy the sunshine and outdoors, but along with the fun, the season brings situations that could harm your furry friend.
