Mittens, a fluffy five-month-old Corgi-Sheltie mix, was hit by a car. His two back legs were severely injured and he did not receive treatment for his injury. He was in severe pain. He couldn’t walk. However, thanks to The WHS and supporters like you he will walk again.

Due to extensive damage and infection, the right leg will be removed. The crushed bones of the left foot are healing but because of the degree of trauma will require a prosthetic, eventually allowing the puppy, named Mittens, to walk without pain.  Surgery on Mittens will be conducted by Dr. Erika Anseeuw, WHS Director of Animal Health.

“The puppy doesn’t have a foot pad so he walks directly on the skin over the bones, which is extremely painful,” said Dr. Anseeuw. “There is an intact ankle joint, which is fortunate because a brace can be attached to it.  Given his small size and friendly disposition, he should adapt with ease.”

The WHS receives three to four cases which require major orthopedic surgery each month; however, this situation is unique given the severity of damage to both hind legs.

Mittens will recuperate in a foster home until he is ready for adoption. A foster home for Mittens has been arranged, but there are other animals in need of foster care.

This year The WHS took in more animals – like Mittens – in need of urgent care. Your donations mend their bones, ease their pain, and give them opportunities to live happy and fulfilling lives.
