Showing heart for dogs with heartworm on Giving Tuesday

Heart disease can kill a person. It can also kill our dogs. Heartworm, a potentially fatal disease where worms live and sustain itself inside a dog’s heart and lungs, is costly to treat at the WHS and requires a long recovery period. “Heartworm is easy to prevent, but can be catastrophic in dogs that already have the disease,” says Dr. Erika Anseeuw, WHS Director of Animal Health. “It’s an invasive disease that takes a lot of time and resources to treat.” Heartworm, a common disease in Manitoba, is transmitted to dogs by infected mosquitos. The larvae grow inside a dog’s … Continued

National Pet Obesity Awareness Day sparks the question: Is your pet a healthy weight?

How much your pet is fed on a daily basis can be a perplexing question to answer as it depends on your pet’s breed, size and exercise routine. Oct. 12 is National Pet Obesity Awareness Day and a day of celebration for Kristie Bailey and Nala, her English Bulldog. Nala was obese when adopted from the Winnipeg Humane Society (WHS) and Bailey helped her seven-year-old dog lose over 20 pounds through proper diet and exercise. Nala’s exercise plan has increased her life span and relieved pressure on her joints and spine. Obese pets are more likely to live shorter lives, … Continued

Winnipeg Humane Society joins pledge to save 1 million cats

The Winnipeg Humane Society (WHS) and shelters across North America aim to save the lives of one million cats by 2019 with the Million Cat Challenge. Vigilante justice hinders, not helps, animals left in hot vehicles

The Winnipeg Humane Society (WHS) is receiving an increase in the number of calls from concerned public about pets being left in vehicles. Winnipeg’s spike in temperature led to an incident on the evening of June 21 where individuals attempted to get into a vehicle with a pet left inside. The WHS experienced a similar incident last week and is concerned more people … Continued
