WHS removes puppy’s leg after hunting trap incident

It was the worst day of Fleece’s young life. The 12-week-old Shepherd puppy stepped on a hunting trap causing some large wounds on his front left leg. He was in intense pain and all alone until he was found and brought to us at the Winnipeg Humane Society. But because of your help, Fleece’s worst days are behind him. Together we’ll make sure Fleece gets all of the love and care he deserves. When he arrived at our clinic we treated him for lice and took a closer look at his leg. The injury was old and gruesome. We don’t know … Continued

Showing heart for dogs with heartworm on Giving Tuesday

Heart disease can kill a person. It can also kill our dogs. Heartworm, a potentially fatal disease where worms live and sustain itself inside a dog’s heart and lungs, is costly to treat at the WHS and requires a long recovery period. “Heartworm is easy to prevent, but can be catastrophic in dogs that already have the disease,” says Dr. Erika Anseeuw, WHS Director of Animal Health. “It’s an invasive disease that takes a lot of time and resources to treat.” Heartworm, a common disease in Manitoba, is transmitted to dogs by infected mosquitos. The larvae grow inside a dog’s … Continued

What I Don’t Know and What I Do…

By Jim Harvey My volunteer position at the Winnipeg Humane Society is ‘Dog Kennel Buddy’ which I’ve been doing for about three years now. The position involves working with the dogs that are housed in the back area of the shelter and taking them out into the yards for some exercise, nature calls, and some human contact. Dogs who come into the shelter find themselves there for all sorts of reasons. Some dogs are found as strays. Others are surrendered because the owners cannot care for the dog. And, of course, some dogs come in after being injured, neglected, or abused. … Continued

Guest Blog: Support Bill C-246

The following blog is written by Debbie Wall. Wall is from Winnipeg and supports Bill C-246, a Private Member’s Bill currently in the House of Commons, which aims to modernize animal protection laws in Canada. It makes my blood boil when I hear of stories like Asha’s, the poor northern Manitoba pup whose abuser posted a video of his cruelty towards her online.  But I don’t hold my breath thinking that he or other perpetrators will receive any type of meaningful punishment.  Canada has the shameful distinction of having some of the weakest animal protection laws in the world. The … Continued

Manage your dog’s anxiety during storms

A thunderstorm can mean many things to people. For some, it’s a ruined day that could have been spent outside, while others find the flashes of lightning and cracks of thunder to be mystifying and calming. But for dogs, thunder and lightning can have an opposite effect. When the clouds roll through the skies and thunder echoes in the streets, our dogs can become frightened. To a dog, this ‘unnatural’ phenomenon can make it feel like the world is crashing down. Thunderstorms can create anxiety in a dog and you may find them in hiding, trembling and – in severe … Continued

Foster Today!

Have you ever wanted to know what it’s like to have a cat in your life, but not sure if you’re ready to make the full commitment? Perhaps you don’t have a lifestyle that allows you to constantly care for a cat, but you still have times when you could support and love a cat. Or maybe you’re just the type of person who loves animals and wants to help in any way possible. We’re seeking foster homes for cats and kittens that are recovering from URI (upper respiratory infection). URI is similar to a person having a cold, so … Continued

10 Ways to be Kind to your Pets

Animals are kind to us. They’re selfless and loving companions, a source of camaraderie, and fill our lives with joy. It’s our duty and privilege to give them the respect, care, and kindness they deserve. That’s why we celebrate Be Kind to Animals Week from May 1-7. While it’s important to be kind to animals year-round, the Be Kind to Animals Week campaign is a long-standing tradition that reminds us of all the ways we can be kind to our furry compadres. Being kind doesn’t necessarily mean committing to adopting an animal. There are many ways you can indirectly benefit … Continued

Cats’ lives saved by Winnipeg Humane Society

Cats that wander the streets are at an increased risk and danger of serious injury. Whether the cat is a stray from cat overpopulation or owned and allowed to roam outside, the number of cats in need of urgent care never ceases to astound The Winnipeg Humane Society (WHS). In the last two weeks, three cats brought to The WHS had gaping wounds, skin ripped away and burned, and a variety of broken limbs. Stix arrived with an extensive section of the skin torn off her tail and burns on the hind legs. Clinic staff needed to remove her … Continued
