The Winnipeg Humane Society will use the power of the Dark Side to raise funds for animals in its care. The 501st Legion, an Imperial Star Wars costuming club, will help the shelter raise funds at its annual Liberty Tax Service 1001 Donations Radio and Telethon on Sunday, March 20. WHS to amputate leg: Removing severely injured leg gives dog new quality of life

Yazmine, a one-year-old Husky Shepherd, broke her front right leg and received no medical attention. The fracture incorrectly healed and now she’s been left with a significant limp and visibly deformed leg. Yazmine is now at The Winnipeg Humane Society and will receive treatment. WHS Director of Animal Health Dr. Erika Anseeuw will amputate the leg giving Yazmine the best opportunity to live a fulfilling life, uninhibited by her leg. On January 13 at 7 p.m., Twyla Francois, a farmed animal cruelty investigator who has worked with several organizations including Canadians for the Ethical Treatment of Farmed Animals, will give a presentation called “Making the Invisible Visible: Advocating for Farmed Animals” in The Winnipeg Humane Society (WHS) Classroom. The Winnipeg Humane Society (WHS) has experienced a dramatic increase in animal intake during the early stages of its new strategic plan and it has impacted the finances of the organization. “We’ve done great work, but it comes at a cost,” The WHS CEO Javier Schwersensky said. “More incoming animals require additional funds to care for them.
