Brunch. I love a good brunch complete with tofu scramble, pan-fried potatoes, fruit, and veggie sausages. There are so many different kinds of veggies sausages on the market, and I never realized how easy it would be to make my own. Meatless Monday: Winter Squash and Red Lentil Soup

Post and recipe by: Angela Tucker Warm, satisfying, tasty, nutritious. Just a few of the adjectives I would use to describe this Winter Squash and Red Lentil Soup. With all this snow that appeared over the weekend here in Manitoba, who doesn’t need a little soup in their life? The internet tells me soup is basically a sweater for your tummy. So, you can’t go wrong. This recipe is a source of protein on its own, but if you were looking to bump it up I would suggest topping it with some roasted chickpeas. The squash and lentils in this … Continued

Farm Animal Welfare and Environment: The Benefits of Free Range Farming

Bill 24, the Red Tape Reduction and Government Efficiency Act, proposes to remove two regulations in The Environment Act that will allow the hog industry in Manitoba to expand. These changes put the welfare of pigs and our environment at risk. Tamarack Farms is a free range farm in Manitoba and offers an organic solution to farming. Learn more about the positive impact Tamarack Farms allows pigs to express their natural behaviour and keep them healthy. Veterinarians too: Winnipeg Humane Society launches Welcome Home Program

Pets need a veterinarian in the same way a human needs a doctor or dentist. A new Winnipeg Humane Society program aims to connect you – new adopters – with a local veterinarian. Each year the WHS adopts over 4,000 pets to people across Manitoba and many of these individuals do not have a pre-existing relationship with a veterinarian. The Welcome Home Program introduces new adopters with participating veterinary clinics and provides them with a free consultation appointment within the … Continued

Changes to caring for cats with URI

As part of the Million Cat Challenge, the WHS is working with UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine to implement changes to the way cats with URI (cat cold) symptoms are cared for. URI cannot be eliminated from the shelter, but there are effective and life-saving methods to manage it. Stress is the main cause of URI within a shelter setting. What we can do is eliminate as much stress as possible by making a cat’s stay at the shelter as comfortable as we can. All incoming cats are now provided double caging. These cages increase the cat’s floor space and … Continued

Help us chart the future of your Winnipeg Humane Society

Dear friends, As the saying goes… “time flies when you are having fun.” A little over two years ago I was given the privilege to become the WHS CEO. At that time I tried to listen carefully to our amazing community. I spoke with donors, volunteers, staff and of course the large animal welfare community. I also talked to citizens who feel invested in the work we do, accepting over 8,000 animals each and every year. It was a steep and rewarding learning curve. By the end of the Summer 2015, we had our first set of strategic goals and … Continued
