WHS In Your School, School Club & Field Trips

Every year, WHS Educators visit hundreds of classrooms and facilitate in house field trips giving thousands of students the chance to learn about animal safety, empathy and welfare.

WHS In Your School

Our Humane Educators are enthusiastic about teaching everyone the importance of animal welfare, safety, and having a responsible attitude toward animals. The WHS educational program is designed by qualified teachers and geared towards the provincial curriculum. Our educators can visit your classroom or host a field trip in our shelter with an interactive presentation geared specifically to your students age group. The goal of this program is to encourage and enhance animal safety, and to nurture a responsible, empathetic attitude toward animals.

Our Education Programs Guide offers a list of the programs designed to coincide with the Manitoba educational curriculum core competencies and themes. We also offer a Pet Empathy and Pet Therapy Program in which we provide animal interaction and behavioural connections for extracurricular groups, students at risk, and adult education programs.

Yes! We offer educational programs designed to coincide with Manitoba educational curriculum core competencies and themes.

What are the key messages?

Mission: To protect all animals from suffering and to promote their welfare and dignity.

Vision: All animals are treated humanely.

We focus on educating youth about the importance of animal safety, having an empathetic attitude towards animals, and about the general welfare of all animals. Empowering youth to become animal advocates.

Are there activities for the students to participate in?

Yes, all presentations come along with an activity to engage youth.

What Grade levels are covered with the WHS presentations?

We offer educational programs to preschool and kindergarten through to Grade 12.

How long are the presentations?

Our preschool and kindergarten presentations are 30 minutes, all other presentations are 60 minutes.

How many students can your facilitators accommodate?

We can accommodate groups up to 30 students in a classroom setting, but also have opportunities for assembly style presentations should this be requested.

Our Dog Safety session will usually involve bringing an Ambassador Dog along to the presentation, however this can also be requested for all other grade levels. Dogs are not mandatory for the school presentations.

What if a student has allergies?

If a student has allergies we can ensure that we do not book an Ambassador Dog to attend.

While this is something we are looking in to providing in the future, we are not yet equipped to provide French presentations.

What does the itinerary look like for the Field Trip option?

We currently provide Field Trips for school groups (maximum 30 students) that are 2-hours in length and include a behind-the-scenes tour of the shelter, a visit from one of our shelter animals, an educational presentation suitable for your grade level, and an activity. Please note that a visit from one of our shelter animals cannot always be guaranteed as this is dependent on the temperament of the animals in the shelter at the time.

We can usually accommodate the time that works best for each school group between 9:00AM – 3:00PM.

Drop off and pick up zone is directly in front of our shelter.

Should a school group wish to host a lunch for their students, we can provide our classroom space for the group to eat their lunch.  Arrangements must be made in advance to ensure our staff prepares the room and we ask that the room remain nut-free.
