Every year the Winnipeg Humane Society closes for the statutory holidays, to ensure our staff receive a small break. This year, we are pleased to extend our holiday closure as a special thank you to our dedicated staff.

COVID-19 has made shelter work more challenging and complex.  Although we cannot eliminate entirely the stress and uncertainty we are facing, we want to take a proactive step to support the well-being of our staff and make a significant gesture to show our gratitude, care and concern.

Our 2020 holiday schedule will be as follows:

Thursday December 24th – Closed
Friday December 25th – Closed (Stat Holiday)
Saturday December 26th – Closed (Stat Holiday)
Sunday December 27th – Closed
Monday December 28th – Closed
Tuesday December 29th – Closed
Wednesday December 30th – Open 11AM – 7PM
Thursday December 31st – Open 11AM – 4PM
Friday January 1st – Closed (Stat Holiday)

We will re-open on January 2nd with regular shelter hours and by appointment only.

Rest assured that the animals are always our priority and there will be staff to look after all their needs. There will also be staff onsite to administer emergency care. However, every December we work to ensure every animal has a home for the holidays (whether it’s to a new loving home or to a foster home) and we’re offering reduced Adoption Fees for the entire month as an added incentive. To book a safe and socially distanced Adoption Appointment, please call 204-982-2035.

Thank you for your understanding as we try to balance work and life during the holidays, while always caring for the animals. If you’d like to show your support with a donation, please visit www.winnipeghumanesociety.ca.

What if I need to surrender an animal?

We encourage you to call us when the shelter reopens on December 30st. In the mean time please follow the link https://www.winnipeghumanesociety.ca/your-family-pet/surrendering-your-pet/ and submit a surrender profile for your pet. If you cannot wait, you may wish to consider another local rescue organization.

What if I have a pet emergency?

We have identified alternative resources for pet owners seeking medical and other services during the holiday closure.

  • If your pet needs immediate veterinary care, contact one of the emergency vet clinics:
    • Pembina Veterinary Hospital (204) 452-9427
    • Bridgwater Veterinary Hospital (204) 452-0911
    • Southglen Veterinary Hospital (204) 452-0077
  • If you are experiencing behaviour challenges, check out our online pet behaviour resources. (https://www.winnipeghumanesociety.ca/yourfamily-pet/behaviour-help/)

What if I find a stray animal?

If you find a stray cat in the community and it appears healthy, cared for and not in danger the WHS recommends you leave the cat alone. The cat might live in the area and has a better chance of finding its way home when not removed.

If you find a stray dog, please call 311 (https://www.winnipeg.ca/cms/animal/) and file a found report with us here: https://www.winnipeghumanesociety.ca/found-animal-report/

If the animal appears to be sick or injured, please call our Animal Emergency line at 204-982-2020 for further direction.

For healthy cats, we asked you to file a found report (https://www.winnipeghumanesociety.ca/found-animal-report/) and care for the cat while the WHS tries to locate the owner. The email account will be monitored to ensure lost animals can be returned to their owners.

Please also post adds on the following Facebook/Websites, to help find the owner:
