Every day, people across Manitoba leave their abusive partners. The decision to leave home often saves their lives and the lives of their children. Deciding to leave, and then actually doing so, is not easy. Studies have shown that a significant number of people delay their decision to leave a partner because of their pet.
If you are a person seeking safety, call the Domestic Violence Provincial Crisis Line at 1-877-977-0007 or TTY: 1-888-987-2829.
If you are a crisis shelter seeking pet foster parents on behalf of people entering your shelter, contact us at 204-982-2049. The process is confidential. As a safety measure for both the abused individual and volunteers, the individual’s identity is never disclosed.
How does SafePet work?
Register as a ‘pet foster parent’
If you are interested in becoming a foster parent through the SafePet program, register below. You’ll be asked to identify the following:
- The type(s) of animal(s) you are willing to house
- The length of time you are willing to look after a pet
- Any restrictions you might have (e.g., size/weight of pet)
Pets are matched with pet foster parents
The Winnipeg Humane Society will find the right foster parent for the pet.
Foster a pet until its owner is able to care for the pet
The foster parent provides the pet with food and shelter and other special needs as required. During the pet’s shelter period, the foster can consult with the participating veterinarian if any concerns or health issues arise. The volunteer is under no obligation to continue to house a pet if an arrangement does not work. Both the volunteer and the individual seeking assistance with her/his pet(s) sign legal documents to eliminate confusion regarding expectations.
The pet is returned to a healthy family environment
The pet foster parent returns the animal to the Winnipeg Humane Society when the abused individual has found longer-term arrangements for her/his pet(s), is once again able to take care of her/his pet(s), or the pre-determined time frame has ended.
Who could become a temporary foster parent under the SafePet program?
If you love animals and care about people in your community, please consider offering shelter to a pet through the SafePet program. If you aren’t sure that you’re a suitable foster parent, feel free to discuss your eligibility with the Winnipeg Humane Society.
