Brian Kozak has gotten a bit of a reputation at the Winnipeg Humane Society as something of a cat whisperer. In his role as a Cat Enrichment Volunteer, they say he has a gift for connecting with cats, particularly the shy ones.

“I think the cats like it because I get down on the floor with them and play with them and pet them,” said Brian, a volunteer for four years and the January 2020 selection for MVP. The shy ones tend to feel better with someone at their level, as opposed to looking down on them. (Being a Cat Enrichment Volunteer is) to get them used to being around people, used to people.”

A lover of animals his whole life, Brian had dogs growing up. But when he moved in with his then-girlfriend (and now wife), he got her a cat and decided he liked them as well.

“I still like dogs, but cats are more conducive to our lifestyle and the Humane Society was an opportunity to help cats,” said Brian, whose household includes two cats.

When he retired, Brian decided he would volunteer his time to the Humane Society, starting out as a Cat Cuddler which has now evolved to the Cat Enrichment program. In addition to his volunteer work, he often posts photos on social media including his Facebook page of cats that he visited. As you can imagine, the response has been extremely positive.

“Hopefully friends will find them and adopt them,” said Brian. “I’ve had a few that have been adopted. Some friends have been interested (in adopting) but couldn’t for whatever reason.”

Even if the adorable cat in the post is gone by the time his Facebook friends get to the Humane Society, it may have sparked a desire to give another cat a furr-ever home.

“If that cute one is gone by the time it’s been posted, there’s always another one in the next condo.”

In addition to his once-a-week stints as Cat Enrichment Volunteer, Brian is also the writer for the monthly MVP profiles.

“Brian tells the story of the important work our volunteers contribute each month, as our volunteer MVP Writer,” says Manager of Volunteer Services Kelle Greene. “We are so grateful to have him as part of our team and to give him the opportunity to be in the spotlight.”

A group of volunteers founded the Winnipeg Humane Society in 1894 and are vital to our success today! With the help of volunteers, we can provide care, love and attention to our four (and sometimes two) legged friends until they find their forever homes. The MVP (Monthly Volunteer Profile) will recognize the work and get to know these special MVP’s in a spotlight each month that includes an article and photo shoot. MVPs will receive a framed photo and gift card as our thanks!

Is there a volunteer you’d like to nominate to be MVP? E-mail us ([email protected]) and tell us why you think they should be an MVP!
