Provincial Government support for Hylife factory farm expansion not in best interest of taxpayers or animal welfare

WINNIPEG — The Winnipeg Humane Society (WHS) is questioning the value-for-money assessment and the decision by the Manitoba Government to hand out $2.0 million in taxpayers dollars towards the expansion of the Hylife factory-farm operation in Neepawa, Manitoba.  In our view, this is not in the best interest of rural communities, taxpayers, and animal welfare. The WHS believes investing the money in small operations so they can become more humane will bring additional jobs and improve the economy, make a positive impact on animal welfare, and reduce environmental risks. We are seeking to meet with Provincial officials as soon as … Continued

Pets need a veterinarian in the same way a human needs a doctor or dentist. A new Winnipeg Humane Society program aims to connect you – new adopters – with a local veterinarian. Each year the WHS adopts over 4,000 pets to people across Manitoba and many of these individuals do not have a pre-existing relationship with a veterinarian. The Welcome Home Program introduces new adopters with participating veterinary clinics and provides them with a free consultation appointment within the … Continued

Cats at the WHS are facing an emergency – And we need YOU to help us through it

You know it is going to be a tough day at our shelter when staff come to your office in tears, absolutely stressed about caring properly for our beloved animals. This is what happened yesterday at the Winnipeg Humane Society. For the first time since we opened our new facility ten years ago there was no existing room to house cats. We had to place them in Vari Kennels (small carrier kennels) overnight. This is not what a shelter should do – even if it was for the night. I had no choice but to declare a shelter State of … Continued

Showing heart for dogs with heartworm on Giving Tuesday

Heart disease can kill a person. It can also kill our dogs. Heartworm, a potentially fatal disease where worms live and sustain itself inside a dog’s heart and lungs, is costly to treat at the WHS and requires a long recovery period. “Heartworm is easy to prevent, but can be catastrophic in dogs that already have the disease,” says Dr. Erika Anseeuw, WHS Director of Animal Health. “It’s an invasive disease that takes a lot of time and resources to treat.” Heartworm, a common disease in Manitoba, is transmitted to dogs by infected mosquitos. The larvae grow inside a dog’s … Continued
