Changes to caring for cats with URI

As part of the Million Cat Challenge, the WHS is working with UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine to implement changes to the way cats with URI (cat cold) symptoms are cared for. URI cannot be eliminated from the shelter, but there are effective and life-saving methods to manage it. Stress is the main cause of URI within a shelter setting. What we can do is eliminate as much stress as possible by making a cat’s stay at the shelter as comfortable as we can. All incoming cats are now provided double caging. These cages increase the cat’s floor space and … Continued

Help us chart the future of your Winnipeg Humane Society

Dear friends, As the saying goes… “time flies when you are having fun.” A little over two years ago I was given the privilege to become the WHS CEO. At that time I tried to listen carefully to our amazing community. I spoke with donors, volunteers, staff and of course the large animal welfare community. I also talked to citizens who feel invested in the work we do, accepting over 8,000 animals each and every year. It was a steep and rewarding learning curve. By the end of the Summer 2015, we had our first set of strategic goals and … Continued

We need more compassion for hogs in Manitoba

Nearly 4000 hogs died in a barn fire this past Thursday. The death these intelligent creatures have faced is mortifying. Desperately trying to get away from the thick toxic smoke, the burning heat inside the barn. Manitoba is the largest hog producing province in Canada. In the last decade, numerous hog barns have burnt down killing tens of thousands of pigs. There are two important facts on the horizon: the Manitoba government has lifted the hog barn moratorium. This means more hogs barns will be built – despite many areas already saturated with them. The second important fact is, the … Continued

Meatless Mondays: Meatless Bacon

Post by: Angela Tucker Recipe from: TheBuddhistChef.com This recipe by The Buddhist Chef instructs you just how easy it is to make your own meatless bacon from scratch, using some fairly basic and easy to find ingredients. One of the concerns over bacon, as with all processed meats, is its connection with an increased cancer risk. For this reason, the World Health Organization, Harvard School of Public Health, and the Canadian Cancer Society recommend minimizing processed meats. And of course, enjoying something made of plant based foods is a way that we can practice compassion to animals. Pigs are similar to … Continued

WHS statement on exotic animal travelling shows

The Winnipeg Humane Society does not support the transportation and use of exotic animals in traveling shows and educational presentations, and urges its supporters and the general public to avoid attending these shows.   Why doesn’t the WHS support these kinds of activities? An exotic animal is an animal non-domesticated by humans. This includes lizards and reptiles, which are often forced to be repeatedly held and restrained against their will throughout these “hands-on” traveling displays and educational programs.  Leading research by reptile biologists has shown that the majority of reptiles in captivity do in fact display stress while being exhibited … Continued

Improving dog transfer protocols: A plan to reduce incidents

Dear WHS friends and supporters, In the past four months, we have faced an unprecedented challenge which caught us off guard: We had three dogs escape from our care during the transfer to or from our facility. This is not only embarrassing for a shelter that has been in active operation since 1894; it is an issue of safety for our staff and the community. It is not easy to write about things that don’t go according to plan. However, we have a pledge to be fully open, accountable and transparent in our work. The Winnipeg Humane Society handles approximately … Continued

Meatless Monday: Olive Lentil Burgers

Post by: Angela Tucker Recipe from: Isachandra.com This is one of my favourite burger recipes, and it comes from Isa Chandra – one of my favourite places to get recipes! I love to double the batch and freeze the extra ones to use later – enjoyed as a burger, or even crumbled into a salad. Mushrooms add amazing flavour to these burgers, and their texture makes them an awesome replacement for meat in many different recipes. This can help increase fibre, vitamins and minerals in your meals, while cutting back on cholesterol, saturated fat and calories. The lentils in this … Continued
