Times flies when you are having fun! A little over a week ago I started my job with The Winnipeg Humane Society. It has been a very exciting first week, especially because I was able to learn first-hand the amazing work that The WHS does every single day to protect and enhance the welfare of animals in our community.

I will share with you some of the things that impacted me the most while reading files and walking around the shelter getting to know more about our operations.

  1. The Winnipeg Humane Society Staff are AWESOME

All uppercase, yes. Everyone I met, regardless of their position within the organization, are absolutely committed to the care and protection of animals in our community. Their passion and love for their work has already inspired me and is making me feel extremely grateful for the opportunity to be part of this team.

  1. The Winnipeg Humane Society has a fully functional veterinarian clinic

The WHS has a model clinic that does spay and neuter procedures, but they also do much, much more. Our veterinarians utilize advanced protocols and our intake and shelter operations staff makes sure records are accurate so each pet gets the right medication and the right chance at a better life. When you think about The WHS you may think “adoptions”, which of course are key to our work. But behind the scenes we have a team of people saving pets’ lives every single day. That has been another very inspiring lesson.

  1. Cat people are FUN.

I had the opportunity to attend the “Just for Cats” film festival event at Park Theatre last Thursday. Both screenings were full (the first one sold out!) and everyone was not only friendly but strong supporters of our efforts. The best t-shirt I saw was a creative take on the rock band KISS: the t-shirt said “HISS” instead.

  1. Our Volunteers are COMMITTED.

I met lots of volunteers this week. They are incredibly important, because without them we just couldn’t function. There are volunteers who walk our dogs and volunteers who spend time with our cats and our rabbits, this is key to their mental health. We have highly trained walkers for more challenging dogs and new walkers for dogs that are more docile. And we have a lot of volunteers that perform so many important duties: from scanning receipts to cleaning our cat condos.

And this is just week one! I look forward to sharing with you more interesting facts about The Winnipeg Humane Society as well as our plans for the future. Thank you for reading and feel free to leave a comment. I will try to respond to you personally.

Cheers,

Javier
