During the holiday season, we strive to surprise our loved ones and bring them delight with a gift we’ve picked out just for them. In fact, many people think a new pet would make the perfect holiday present. While animals are long-term commitments that require an ongoing investment of time, money and responsibility from the recipient, giving an animal as a gift can work if there’s enough thought and consideration put into the decision.

Making responsible choices about gifted pets can save unwanted animals from being given to shelters in the days and weeks following the holidays. Before you adopt a new friend for someone, here are some things to consider:

An animal is a 10 to 20-year commitment

Nobody should be surprised with an animal they will have to take care of for the next decade or more. It should be a planned decision somebody makes for themselves or after lots of discussion with the gift-giver. Making sure you find the right pet that will fit in with the lifestyle of the owner is key. This is why it’s often best if they are involved in the selection of their new friend.

Owning a pet is an investment

Owning a pet can cost a lot of money, and that’s not including any unexpected vet bills that might come along. You might know somebody who would love to have the companionship of a pet in their life, but do you really know if they are in the right financial position to take one on? You are most likely ok to proceed if you know the answer is “yes” or you are prepared to cover those costs on the recipient’s behalf.

The holiday season is busy and stressful

The holidays are a very busy time and a source of stress for many families, however many people are off work and therefore may have extra time to devote to welcoming a new furry friend. New pet owners should be prepared to spend lots of time with their new companion and should have a designated safe room or kennel where they can leave their pet when they are not able to be monitored.

 Give a gift certificate

If there’s someone you want to get a pet for, you could give that person some basic pet supplies as a present and include a gift certificate saying you’d love to pick out a pet with them once they are ready. In fact, you can purchase supplies and a WHS Gift Certificate in our Pet Shop that will cover the adoption fee. All proceeds go back to supporting the animals at the shelter, making your gift twice as meaningful.

Making responsible choices about pets around Christmas can save unwanted animals from being given to shelters in the days and weeks following the holidays. A pet is for life, not just for Christmas! Stop by the shelter at 45 Hurst Way to meet our adoptable animals or make a donation.
