Students
The Community Service Student Program was developed to give students aged 16 years or older the opportunity to gain work experience in a real-life job setting. Students may receive a credit towards their high school diploma upon successfully completing our minimum commitment of 80 hours of service. Contact your school counsellor/work-experience coordinator first to find out if you can obtain credit toward your diploma.
IMPORTANT NOTE FOR STUDENTS: Students must complete an information session and interview by February 1st for June graduation.
Why does The Winnipeg Humane Society have a minimum commitment of 80 hours when my school’s requirement is less? Each student placement requires our resources to orient, screen and provide appropriate job training. Our minimum commitment of 80 hours of service helps to maintain consistency within our organization and fosters dependability and reliability.
What jobs can I do?A community service student will be given a list of jobs that are closely supervised so a performance evaluation can be completed at the end of the placement. We do have limited opportunities for students, so it is best to start the process early in September.
What is the process for community service students?Contact volunteer services at 982-2043 to book a seat at our next information session where you will receive a Community Service Student Program Application & Agreement. It is your responsibility to completely fill out both documents and get the appropriate signatures prior to your interview. Further, it is your responsibility to contact volunteer services once you have completed the information session to book an interview. We will not accept calls from a teacher, coordinator or a parent to arrange your interview.
