SARAM
The Winnipeg Pet Rescue Shelter, D’Arcy’s A.R.C., Manitoba Mutts and the Winnipeg Humane Society have formed a coalition called SARAM (Shelter and Rescue Alliance of Manitoba).
The purpose of this coalition is to facilitate and support the efforts of local animal welfare groups to decrease the number of homeless, neglected and abused companion animals and to promote responsible pet ownership in Manitoba by working together as a coalition/alliance.
The group meets monthly to discuss animal welfare issues in Manitoba including amendments to the proposed cat licensing by-law in the City of Winnipeg, “Fluffy’s Law” and addressing responsible pet ownership.
Carla Martinelli-Irvine, Director of the Winnipeg Pet Rescue shelter and Chairperson of SARAM states “It is our hopes that working together will help to decrease the euthanasia rate of animals in our Province and bring awareness to the overpopulation issues in our City.”
Shelter and Rescue Alliance of Manitoba (SARAM)
Mission Statement:
To facilitate and support the efforts of local animal welfare groups to decrease the number of homeless, neglected and abused companion animals and to promote responsible pet ownership in Manitoba by working together as a coalition/alliance.
Standards for SARAM:
- Must be incorporated as either a non-profit or have charitable status
- Must not show aggression or slander another shelter, rescue, employee thereof, board members and associate members, publicly, privately, or in written form.
- Must have a board of directors
- Must adopt animals to the public
- Must have an excellent reference from a reputable veterinarian
- Has a mandatory spay/neuter program in place whereby adoptable animals will be fixed (by a maximum of 12 months of age – except for extenuating circumstances, such as health issues are an exception) as part of adoption contract.
- Has a vaccination protocol in place as part of adoption contract (puppies minimum of 2 – parvo and distemper) that is under that supervision of veterinarian
- Proper veterinarian care throughout the life of the animal as part of the adoption contract
- Animals must have proper veterinarian care prior to adoption
- Animals from your organization have never been seized or a surrender request has not occurred.
- Board members must conduct themselves with the highest integrity.
- Any violation to Board standards may lead to dismissal from SARAM coalition.
