Over the past years, The Winnipeg Humane Society has changed its policies and approach to handling “owned animals”. The shelter no longer maintains an open door policy with regards to such animals and therefore it is imperative that you contact The WHS before bringing your pet to the shelter. You must speak with an Animal Advisor and make an appointment to bring your animal(s) in.
The careful management of the number of incoming animals day-to-day is essential to decreasing the number of animals needlessly euthanized.

Surrendering your animal to The WHS should be considered as a LAST resort. Due to the volume of animals the shelter receives each and every day, we are NOT able to guarantee the future of your pet. You will be required to sign a form indicating that you understand our policy that your pet may or will be euthanized (put to sleep).
We understand that surrendering your pet is a very difficult decision to make and should we be your last resort, please be honest with our Animal Advisors. They are here to help and gather as much information about your pet (and their problems too) in order to ensure that your pet could/will be successfully adopted into a new home.
Cats: 2 out of 4 are adopted
Dogs: 4 out of 5 are adopted
The staff at The WHS is committed to supporting your efforts as a responsible pet owner in exploring realistic alternatives to bringing your animal to the shelter. We know you want the best for your pet.
Please feel free to contact the Animal Intake Department anytime for further guidance not outlined here. We hope we can be a valuable resource to you in offering various services such as behavior consultations, customized information mail outs, and practical advice, as well as support during this difficult time.
