May 2022 Monthly Volunteer Profile: Marlene Puls

When Marlene Puls retired in 2010, she told herself she wanted to do two things: volunteer at the Winnipeg Humane Society and learn a second language. She’s aced her commitment to the WHS, but the Italian can be best described as a work in progress. In addition to her weekly shift with the Behaviour Cat team, Marlene is a regular fixture at most Winnipeg Humane Society events, helping out wherever she can lend a hand. And she’s also a monthly donor. “I chose the Humane Society because I like animals. I have cats and have had cats since 1982,” she … Continued

What is the WHS “Grading System”?

Dear WHS Friends, Some of you may have heard that the WHS has implemented a “scoring system” for animals coming in. There has been some questions about what it is, so we feel it’s important to clarify what it is, and why we are doing it. The name of this initiative (“scoring”) and the fact that pets are given a score have caused concerns about WHS using this as a way to euthanize more animals based on a cold, numbers-based system. In fact, the opposite is true. We are committed to save more animals than ever before. I will try to … Continued

James doesn’t need eyes to see your love

James was found as a stray puppy who suffered severe head trauma, damaging both of his eyes. His left eye was hanging out of its socket when he arrived at the WHS, and it had been for some time. It couldn’t be saved. James’ mouth was FULL of broken baby teeth from the injury, making it too painful for him to open his mouth. Dr. Bowen, WHS Director of Veterinary Services, immediately removed James’ left eye and broken baby teeth to relieve him of pain. James undoubtedly pushed through extreme pain to survive on his own, all alone at 3-months-old. … Continued
