He was frozen, but YOU saved his life

Joey was found outside in the cold and brought to the WHS. He was frozen. So frozen that his temperature didn’t even show up on a thermometer. The tiny kitten couldn’t stand or lift his head. His body was weak and limp. To save Joey’s life, two WHS Clinic staff spent 3-hours warming him up with their own bodies. It was critical that Joey gradually warmed up. If his temperature was rising too fast, he could go into shock and die. Dr. Bowen, WHS Director of Veterinary Services, held Joey against her body during her lunch hour with a hot … Continued

Broken bones, amputations and a new life: Octavian’s Story

Octavian was found as a stray and brought to the WHS in December. His tail was hanging limp and he wasn’t able to use it. He also walked oddly on his back leg. Both injuries were caused by old fractures that didn’t heal properly. He also needed extensive dental work. Octavian clearly had to push through pain to survive on his own. In order for Octavian to live a pain-free life, he had his full tail amputated, his leg amputated, and most of his teeth removed. Octavian’s surgeries and care cost just under $3,000. He is just ONE example of … Continued

No matter their size, every animal matters

Max was found outside in the freezing cold with frostbite on one of his tiny toes and on his tail. Thankfully his finder noticed him outside in their yard, caught him, and brought him to the Winnipeg Humane Society. Max needed surgery to remove his frozen toe and the tip of his tail so he could live pain free. Our clinic staff noticed he was very socialized, which means he was likely someone’s pet before getting lost. After his surgery, Max spent time in recovery at the WHS until he could go into adoptions. Once in adoptions, he quickly found … Continued

Showing heart for dogs with heartworm on Giving Tuesday

Heart disease can kill a person. It can also kill our dogs. Heartworm, a potentially fatal disease where worms live and sustain itself inside a dog’s heart and lungs, is costly to treat at the WHS and requires a long recovery period. “Heartworm is easy to prevent, but can be catastrophic in dogs that already have the disease,” says Dr. Erika Anseeuw, WHS Director of Animal Health. “It’s an invasive disease that takes a lot of time and resources to treat.” Heartworm, a common disease in Manitoba, is transmitted to dogs by infected mosquitos. The larvae grow inside a dog’s … Continued
