February 2023 Monthly Volunteer Profile: Shona Strome

Cat Adoption Assistant Shona Strome calls her two hours of volunteer work in Kitty Kat Way ‘refreshing’ and looks forward to it every week. “I always feel good after my shift, I find,” she explained. “I go home after my shift and I feel energized.” A relative newcomer to the Winnipeg Humane Society’s volunteer ranks, Shona is obviously a quick learner. She’s been volunteering at the WHS for six months but she’s already mentored four or five new volunteers. “It’s good to have new people coming on and I enjoy showing them the ropes,” she said. Shona retired from the … Continued

Be a Hero to Animals like Dorrie

Sometimes, second chances look a little bit different. This was the case for Dorrie. The Saint-Boniface Museum is located in an over 180 year old building. The building is amazing, but due to its age, it is easy for rodents to find their way in. Emilie and the staff found out about our Barn Buddies program and wanted to see if they could find a fit that would help them and an animal in need. That’s when they met Dorrie. Dorrie was a great cat, but he liked his alone time. He needed to find a living situation where he could … Continued

Foster Parents Are Heroes

Without our Fosters, the Winnipeg Humane Society (WHS) would not be able to help as may animals as we do. The shelter is bursting at the seams and fosters make sure that we have some other options when it comes to giving animals a safe place to heal or wait for their forever family. Jill Bristow has been a long time foster at the WHS. She has fostered countless kittens and helped them get a good start on life. During her foster journey she also met her cat Gracie. Gracie has severe Cerebellar Hypoplasia which makes her very wobbly and … Continued

Second Chances Happen Here

Across our city and province, there are animals (and their humans) in crisis. Many are simply looking for their next meal. It takes many heroes to help keep the Winnipeg Humane Society (WHS) in operation and working to ensure no animal goes hungry. “Every time we go out, we see people who are very appreciative of the food bank and happy that they are able to feed their pet.” Two of those heroes are Sadia and Sharukh, who volunteer their time as WHS Emergency Pet Food Bank Drivers, collecting and distributing pet food for families in need. Growing up in … Continued

CEO Blog: Shelter Capacity and How You Can Help

As the world changes once again to what we can refer to as the new normal, so does shelter life. The WHS is filled to the brim with friends from all walks of life. Every nook and cranny shelters our animals – strays, surrenders, injured animals, critters and so on. Our last few months of adoptions have slowed and are mirroring pre-pandemic numbers; what does this mean for us – we don’t know. What we do know is other shelters across Canada are experiencing similar setbacks. The key to our success is to continue to adopt animals into loving homes. … Continued

Support your Winnipeg Humane Society through Employee Giving

A message from WHS CEO Javier Schwersensky: Introducing a new way to support your Winnipeg Humane Society Every year, your Winnipeg Humane Society treats and rescues over 7,000 pets, assists over 7,000 pet owners with spay/neuter surgeries and supports over 40 local animal rescues. And all of this is possible with the support of an incredible community. We exist because of people like YOU. Today, we are proud to announce a new initiative based on this spirit of community: The Winnipeg Humane Society Employee Giving Program.  The idea is simple: Companies big and small can sign-up, from small businesses to … Continued

No matter their size, every animal matters

Max was found outside in the freezing cold with frostbite on one of his tiny toes and on his tail. Thankfully his finder noticed him outside in their yard, caught him, and brought him to the Winnipeg Humane Society. Max needed surgery to remove his frozen toe and the tip of his tail so he could live pain free. Our clinic staff noticed he was very socialized, which means he was likely someone’s pet before getting lost. After his surgery, Max spent time in recovery at the WHS until he could go into adoptions. Once in adoptions, he quickly found … Continued
