Meatless Monday: Winter Squash and Red Lentil Soup

Post and recipe by: Angela Tucker Warm, satisfying, tasty, nutritious. Just a few of the adjectives I would use to describe this Winter Squash and Red Lentil Soup. With all this snow that appeared over the weekend here in Manitoba, who doesn’t need a little soup in their life? The internet tells me soup is basically a sweater for your tummy. So, you can’t go wrong. This recipe is a source of protein on its own, but if you were looking to bump it up I would suggest topping it with some roasted chickpeas. The squash and lentils in this … Continued

Meatless Mondays: Vegan Caesar Salad

Post by: Angela Tucker Recipe from: Ohsheglows.com I have loved this recipe for a long time, but I was recently reminded of it when an amazing colleague made it for a work function. I have also made this recipe for work pot lucks, and it is always a great success! My favourite thing about this recipe? It uses roasted chickpeas instead of croutons! What an interesting idea for enjoying more pulses! At said work function, many people who normally wouldn’t touch chickpeas actually tried some! This recipe also includes other nutritional powerhouses such as hemp hearts, kale and cashews. This salad … Continued

The MVP Inspiration

By: Jim Harvey Last May I was asked by the WHS if I would like to participate in a new initiative called the ‘Monthly Volunteer Profile’ (MVP) which recognizes and profiles a different volunteer each month. The MVP is selected by the volunteer services group based on nominations from other volunteers or staff. My contribution to the project is photographing the volunteer working at their job within the WHS. The photographs are included as part of the article written by Brian Kozak and posted to the WHS website. I did not have to think twice about participating in the MVP program. … Continued

Meatless Mondays: Cozy Butternut, Sweet Potato and Red Lentil Stew

Post by: Angela Tucker Recipe from: OhSheGlows.com Spring is on its way, but it never hurts to have a healthy comfort food recipe on hand for those lingering chilly days (like this one from ohsheglows.com)! I love one pot meals like this Cozy Butternut, Sweet Potato and Red Lentil Stew. You have your carbs, protein and veggies all in one bowl, which is great for a quick, satisfying meal. If you like, you can even pair this on top of cooked brown rice or your favourite whole grain. The great thing about the carb sources in this recipe is that they … Continued

WHS statement on exotic animal travelling shows

The Winnipeg Humane Society does not support the transportation and use of exotic animals in traveling shows and educational presentations, and urges its supporters and the general public to avoid attending these shows.   Why doesn’t the WHS support these kinds of activities? An exotic animal is an animal non-domesticated by humans. This includes lizards and reptiles, which are often forced to be repeatedly held and restrained against their will throughout these “hands-on” traveling displays and educational programs.  Leading research by reptile biologists has shown that the majority of reptiles in captivity do in fact display stress while being exhibited … Continued

Broken bones, amputations and a new life: Octavian’s Story

Octavian was found as a stray and brought to the WHS in December. His tail was hanging limp and he wasn’t able to use it. He also walked oddly on his back leg. Both injuries were caused by old fractures that didn’t heal properly. He also needed extensive dental work. Octavian clearly had to push through pain to survive on his own. In order for Octavian to live a pain-free life, he had his full tail amputated, his leg amputated, and most of his teeth removed. Octavian’s surgeries and care cost just under $3,000. He is just ONE example of … Continued

No matter their size, every animal matters

Max was found outside in the freezing cold with frostbite on one of his tiny toes and on his tail. Thankfully his finder noticed him outside in their yard, caught him, and brought him to the Winnipeg Humane Society. Max needed surgery to remove his frozen toe and the tip of his tail so he could live pain free. Our clinic staff noticed he was very socialized, which means he was likely someone’s pet before getting lost. After his surgery, Max spent time in recovery at the WHS until he could go into adoptions. Once in adoptions, he quickly found … Continued
